SmartCheck as an alternative to Goose

I was guided to SmartCheck - another audio checklist available for iOS devices on the Apple App store. Its $14.99 plus another $3.99 for the MacOS editor to build your own lists. The developer is responsive to questions…

Its not a bad alternative - doesn’t have the conditional branching or similar features - plus the speech reading rate (even on Fast) is still too slow for my taste.

Other alternatives are ForeFlight or Gamrin Pilot.

From some anecdotal research, there are few pilots who use audio checklists. I suspect the economics for a commercial app simply aren’t there - likely why Miralou sold to Aerosys and why there is no support or even presence from Mirko Hahn.

Sadly, Goose appears to be a dead duck.

Maybe Aerosys would consider putting the app out as Open Source and see whether the community could provided ongoing support and operation.

This is a bit premature as I have not yet tried in flight, but this seems to be a reasonable alternative for the basics.

Yes, it lacks many of the features of Goose and even at its highest speech rate, is still slow relative to Goose. You can turn it on to challenge/response mode and auto advance - both of which make the slower speech tolerable.

The latest release (V7) was up on the App store 2 days ago - and the author is very response to email and support questions. At $14.99, its the price of a a couple of gallons of fuel… the Mac editor is another $4 and worth the price.

As someone reminded me me the other day, in flying, the cheapest thing is the Nut behind the Yoke…

How does its « challenge/response » mode work? Does one have to type each response? Or the response is just not read, but advancing in the checklist is just a tap? The documentation does not make any mention of speech recognition, so I assume it it not that.

The documentation also seems to suggest one cannot skip an item and be reminded to come back to it?

When Challenge/Response is turned on, only the Challenge is spoken. You can advance the checklist with a tap on the screen. There is no provision for skipping an item and being reminded of same.

This app does not support speech recognition and I’ve found its auto-advance on takeoff (as an example), not to work.

Aerosys released a new version of Goose yesterday that fixes the Conditional branching using the Yes/No option. The picker is still not displaying the labels/buttons and so I couldn’t figure out how to get that to work.

Goose is a far superior checklist app than Smart Check - higher functionality and quality.
